As far as what you can put in, your only limit is money. You can put in the same Jeep 4 popper right up to a 500CI Cadillac 8 banger.

As far as what you can LEAGALLY put in, that's a different story. First check you local laws concerning modifications. Some places won't allow you to put in an engine that wasn't originally available. So you could replace the 2.4 with the 4.0 but that's it. Next, check your local emission laws. You might be able to put in whatever you want as long as it passes at the same level as a 2001 TJ.

Good luck.

cheapest thing is to replace the 2.5L four banger. People are getting these little motors out of their jeeps as fast as they can these days.

Since you live in a place where you worry about smog that's probably what you should do.

The best thing to do is move to a place where there are no smog laws, drop in a small block 350 and chevy trans, adapt it to the NP231 transfercase and climb the hills.

you are only limited by your money. if you have disposable funds put a small block 350 in it get a new transmission/transfer case, driveshafts the whole works. if you are on a limited budget stick with the same motor.

You'd have to replace the transmission and maybe the rear end. And the transfer case, suspension and most of the front end if it's 4WD.
