There is an elderly couple living in my apartment complex. I will call them Mary and Carl. Both are in their 70s and are very very nice. The problem is that both are alcoholics, drinking all hours of the day. Mary seems a "not in touch w/ reality" and seems to not have had a bath in months, she wears the same old dirty dress for weeks at a time, she has an incontinence problem but does not wear the adult diapers and upon visiting their house, although not too cluttered, is incredibly dirty and smells horrible due to Marys lack of bladder and colon control. Carl seems indifferent to the filthy living conditions and his wifes problems. They have no living children or family that i know about. What should i do, who do I call?

Though I was heartbroken to have seen a loved-one live that way (and there was nothing we could do about it), Skeeter... is right, they are adults, and can live the way they choose. It is not up to you, or the government, to think for them. If they want health care or a social worker (which I'm sure they don't), they'll call for themselves.

They very well might have made the choice to stay home together, and never send either to a nursing home or hospital (my grandparents promised this to each other--and both kept their word).

Certainly is a moral dilemma. They are in their 70s and really should be able to live out their lives as they choose, but on the other hand, this is the road I would take, they are obviously in need of care and I would anonymously call your local aged care health people and ask them to go round and see your neighbours, that way you know you have at least tried something to help their situation. Good Luck

Well, Im so sorry to hear about your dilemma......
I am a nurse and I dont think anyone at any age should be drinking at all hours of the day! Thats is a problem in itself. There is Adult Protective Services though out the US and I think you should notify them today. They are available 24/7. If you think they are at all in an unhealthy situation...... there are endangering to themselves. This assessment is made to determine if they are capable of living on their own in that enviroment safely. Which it sounds like they are not.
Social Services provides help to people like them and to the kind the neighbor like you. I wish you the best of luck!!!

You should contact your local services and let them know your concern. They seem like the need help badly and I work with elderly people and i am a cna and i would be worried about infections bed sores and so on. They could get the help they they desperately need.Maybe someone could volunteer and clean their house for them to help them out too. Good Luck and hope everything goes well.

The best thing to do is contact your local social services department or where I live there is a place called Valley Aging services. They can help by putting you in touch with the proper authorities.

If you contact your local social services office, I'm sure they can either point you in the right direction or take the info and see if they can send someone out to educate and/or help this couple out.
Bless you for caring about someone like that.

The Dept. of Health. They're endangering themselves by living in that filth. It's really sad. They will probably condemn the apartment and get Mary and Carl the help they need. It's nice of you to do this for them!

for my section, it relies upon on whether i like the youngster. If I do, age of consent is sixteen, and that i'm on the age i'm now or no longer plenty older, i could decide for it. i do no longer think of age ought to remember in a courting. could I be careful in that form of courting? confident. yet could i've got faith undesirable for it? No. my very own mom and father are ten years aside in age, and that i know firsthand that some sixteen year olds are extra mature, clever, and intellectually stimulating than "adults". As for pedophile comments -- they're sixteen. In many of the U.S., it somewhat is the age of consent, and in lots of places, it somewhat is youthful..
