The Austrian version of German, close to Bavarian.
And that is the ONLY language spoken there!
I lived there for 6 years.

They speak German. Each region has their own dialect, just like in the United Kingdom each city speaks English with a different accent. These days, most young Austrians speak 3 or more languages.

Hi, official language is German.
Although Austria has adapted the German language and it differs somewhat to the German, but only minimally.

Sprechen sie Deutsche in Osterreich! (They speak Greman in Austria) If you want a famous native Austrian think Ah-nold Schwartznnegger. Pretty strong Greman accent though not as strong as it used to be.
It is a good question -- it wouldn't surprise me if someone said Austrian! It is very culturally tied to Germany. This is one reason the world didn't flinch much when Hitler took it over in 1938 -- they figured it was German anyway.
I am guessing it is not part of Germany in that it was part of the Austria-Hungary Empire for many years. Germany was not a country until 1868. In fact many hundred years ago the term "German" was consisdered an insult. This is according to history teachers I have had.

They speak German but it is a dialect as is the German spoken in Switzerland. I suppose the nearest comparison would be a London accent compared with Geordie or Yorkshire.

Stupid no, interesting: very much so...! I always wondered the same thing myself. And therefore, what happens when I give someone a thumbs up or down? Do they get credit for my hospitality? LOL. Anyway, I see someone has answered well, so my curiosity is satisified. I'll give you a star!!

Mostly German. Lots of Italian, too. Plus all those Eastern European languages! Depends what part of the country you are in, eh?
And it;s 'lingual', to help your English.
