No it is not true. It is a fiction created by the left.
The truth is that prior to the US discovering Saddam's chemical weapons program we allowed US companies to sell dual-use components to Iraqi companies that certified that those components would be used to make things such as insecticides. When Iraq reported an anthrax outbreak among their goats and sheep we allowed them to purchase samples of the virus so they could mass-produce vaccines.
Once we discovered that Saddam had a WMD program these sales were banned.
Of course it did not do any good. Germany and France then went and sold these products to Saddam. In fact a German company designed Saddam's sarin gas factory.
BTW - can anybody who thinks that we supplied weaponry to Iraq provide the _name_ of a weapon that was supposedly supplied? (Hint: the only US made tank in Iraq was a WWII-era Sherman that was in a museum!)

To my understanding he didn't actually buy them, they were given to him.
At the time Saddam Hussein was fighting the Communists who were trying to set up in Iraq. Since Communism was the end-all be all of evil to America, America helped Saddam Hussein kick them out. Afterwards, despite knowing his fondness for the torture, America left him in place as a safeguard against the Communists coming back in to try to take over Iraq again. Then we all watched as the hilarity ensued.

Yes it's a historical fact now. We sold him all the weapons of mass destruction he wanted because he was against Iran which was the Axis of evil in the 80's. We gave him plenty of Biological and chemical weapons.

No. The US and Britain only sold Iraq the majority of his conventional weapons (guns, tanks, ammo, etc).
His chemical weapons were obtained from other countries, or developed in house.
