Are there designers who actually "design" cats? (just like designer clothing?) I mean, how does that work?

Also, how do you call these people? Cat designer or pet designer? i don't know if there're such terms though...

I just found out about these things and I thought this is a very interesting profession.

Designer cats/dogs or any animal is a term given to a animal that is bred for a specific quality, that may or may not be good for the animal and caters to a mass public that is intrested in odd or strange looking or acting animals. Usually is a animal that is cross breed, genetically to be unusual. Most Designer breeders are out to make money, and fame not better the breed tehy are working on. Example of Designer cats are Munchkins, Polydactyls, or cross breed kittens give cute hybred names Like Ragarex, or Tonkasians and fool igonorant buyers into paying high prices for mix breed animals. All breed of all animals get some sort of Designer breeder creeping up. Fainting Goats, Easter Egg Chickens. Dogs are the worst so far. Minature Rottwielers, American Chows, Pointing Red Labs, shih-a-poos, Golden Doodles, Puggles AAAAAHHH people trying to make mutts sound so elaborate so they can sell them for 500 to 800$.

All of the previous posts tell you what a designer cat is... and I want to know why you would consider such a profession? Ask yourself if you plan on finding owners for all the kittens you breed that do not meet your standards? What will you do if you can't find owners? Will you dump them on a dirt road somewhere so they might get shot, eaten or starve?? Have a vet euthanize them? Send them to animal control? It costs taxpayers approximately $100 per cat to euthanize in the state of Georgia! Designer cats are only here to fill a niche in a market with lots of money to blow.. don't be involved with such a shallow, inhumane profession.

It's just a gimmick. A designer cat is just a purebred cat, bred to look remarkable in some way and to have a temperament suited to apartment living (usually this means a less intelligent, more affectionate temperament). The cats are generally bred primarily to sell for profit, which means that you can't assume the breeder gives any regard to the health and robustness of the animals -- only to their appearance. The breeds usually aren't shown in cat shows or judged by the cat breeding community; the standard set for the breed is made up by the breeder instead.

But the thing that distinguishes a designer cat from all other purebred cats is that they are sold neutered -- their genes are as-if proprietary, and you can't buy them to start your own stock without the breeder's permission (and presumably, a large fee).

They are cats tailor made through careful breeding and genetic engineering. Since this takes effort, yes, you could say these cat's have "designers." They're probably genetic scientests somewhere.

They are cats to basicly be used as fashion items or accesories, and incredibly expensive. In these respects, they're just like designer anything else.

Up to 15% of people are allergic to cats
Allergy-proof cats could be the next genetically modified animals to be born.

A biotechnology company intends to alter the genetic makeup of moggies to create the perfect pet for allergic cat lovers.

The cats that we produce will be like any other cats except they will no longer have the protein that causes an allergic reaction in human beings

Jackie Avner, Transgenic Pets
Transgenic Pets claims sufferers will soon be able to own a cat without fear of a runny nose or streaming eyes.

But animal welfare groups say the plans raise serious animal welfare and ethical issues.

"We're simply removing a non-essential protein from the cats and it shouldn't hurt the cats in any way," Jackie Avner of Transgenic Pets told the BBC. "The resulting cats will improve the medical health and the quality of life for millions of people."

Thousand dollar pet

Transgenic Pets is working with cattle cloning expert Jerry Yang of the University of Connecticut, US. According to Professor Yang, an allergen-free feline could be available for sale by the year 2003. It would come with a $1,000 (£709) price tag.

The company is still looking for funding to carry out the work. It intends to knock out the gene that codes for the protein linked to human allergic reactions.

"Allergic sensitivity to cats has been attributed to one major protein that is secreted on the cat's skin," said Ms Avner. "The cats that we produce will be like any other cats except they will no longer have the protein that causes an allergic reaction in human beings."

But the plans have been criticised by the UK's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).

'Careful consideration'

Vicky Robinson of the Research Animals Department said the work was a trivial application of a technology that already raised serious animal welfare and ethical issues.

"While we sympathise with those people that have allergies we don't think this justifies producing GM cats," she said in a statement.

"Many of the kittens are likely to die before birth and of those that survive there is the very real possibility that they may have abnormalities that compromise their welfare."

Peter Jinman, Junior Vice President of the British Veterinary Association called for public discussion of the issue.

"Instead of changing the environment to suit the animal, we are now looking at changing the animal to fit the environment," he told BBC News Online. "This is a new step that demands very careful consideration."
