I second St. John the Divine. Say hi to their peacocks and do a tour, it's a beautiful place. I'd also suggest a visit to Columbia's campus, since it's right there. Also visit the Cloisters and then take the bus downtown to the Met. If you're going in May or later visit the Met's rooftop garden. It's always spectacular.

When I visit, I love just getting out and walking on the street and really experiencing the city! Oh, the things you'll see!!!

Dip into a little deli or diner that isn't on all the tourist sites, have a hamburger at one of the many of Hamburger Heaven's and get a kick out of the cranky waitresses. Find a place to sit in the park and just people watch and take in the view of the buildings above the trees. Certainly don't miss ALL the touristy stuff like Ellis Island or the Metropolitan Museum of Art but take some time to just stroll and take it all in... including the scent of the roasting nuts and hot dogs!!!!

It may be "touristy" of sorts, but not many tourists would think of City Island since it is so far up in the Bronx from the rest of Manhattan.

City Island is located in the North Bronx (separated from the rest of the mainland by Pelham Bay Park). To get there, take the uptown "6" train to the last stop (Pelham Bay Park...do not use the train whose last stop is "177th Street - Parkchester"). Once you get off the station (safe area), take the BX29 bus to City Island.

Once you are there, the feel of the area comes off more New England/Cape Cod than New York City. Aside from the many boats docked on the island, there are many seafood restaurants as well. If it wasn't for the fact that a New York City bus runs through it, you wouldn't even think you were in New York City.

Last time I was there I tried to sample every type of pizza in town. I don't know what to tell you, upstate NY is beautiful, inside the city you are going to run into a lot of tourists, but those things are cool. I think my favorite thing in NY is the Museum of Natural History, which is phenominal. I also enjoyed the aircraft museum on the carrier they just moved up river. The Empire State building has a great view at night, but it gets windy. The Chrylser Building has a lot of history to it as well as a nice view. If it were me I would just start walking around aimlessly in NY, you can't help but run into something great by chance.
