Tony Blair announced this week that we should all switch over to energy light bulbs and the normal light bulbs should be banned in two years time. That's fine but you can't use flourescent energy light bulbs with dimmer swithes so is there another type or will we all have to buy new dimmer switches?

No. Recently a few high efficiency bulbs have become available which can be used with old fashioned dimmer switches. They are a little more expensive I believe. See references below.

In California, where blackouts from too many people using too much energy is a real problem, I can see the banning of less efficient light sources becoming a reality. The newer lightbulbs use 25% less energy than incandescents. Solar power is very expensive to install and not everyone lives in an area where the sun is readily available at all times of the year. Wind sources are becoming more and more popular, however they are being blocked in some areas - where their use would be phenomonal - by military whose radars pick up the propellors as aircraft. Living in a free society does not mean you get to live in it free of responsibility. We have laws against rape, murder, assault and theft because people can not be entirely trusted to self regulate. Likewise, we have laws regulating corporations and the products they make, because organizations of people, like individual people themselves, can not be entirely trusted to self-regulate. As for why cigarettes are still legal.. that's easy. Two reasons. One, we've tride outlawing a harmful and popular drug before - alcohol - and that only made violent crime go through the roof. Two, cigarettes have paid off more politicians to keep it legal.
