I hope your puppy is OK.
Shepherds are good guard dogs, but you certainly don't want her attacking people. She doesn't need to bark or be nasty to be a good guard dog, the idea is to warn you, not to attack.

GSD's can be good guard dogs, but it's not something you can depend on. Some naturally protect, some need training, some just aren't interested in protecting more than another breed might, but would alert you to danger. If you are worried about thieves and strangers, a security system or a camera would be a better idea. You should protect your dog, and find another way to defend you both.

I have a German Shepherd and I think he would die trying to protect me and my family. German Shepherds are very devoted and loyal to their owners. They are just an all around great dog to have.
Since your GSD is still a puppy, I highly recommend any obedience training you can find for her. She will be a strong willed dog and you will need to know how to handle her correctly. She will be highly intelligent, so training should be a snap for her and lots of fun.
I hope your puppy recovers quickly and you enjoy her for many years to come. Take care.

Yes they make wonderful Guard Dogs when trained right. Take her to a Pets Mart close to you and tell the trainer what you expect of your dog and they will train her just for that.
I have a Border Collie and got her into Puppy and Basic Training and she does grate, Now we are having her trained on behavior around other dogs. Because she is a herding dog her social life around other dogs s u c k s ....
Wanted a G.S. but our yard right now is too small. When we move onto our larger place intend to it a male Shepard.
God Will take Care of the Puppy and she will get better
God Bless

German Shepherds CAN be great guard dogs if they are trained correctly. Neighbors of ours are guard-training their 3yr old Belgian Malinois, and they do daily exercises for attack/obedience, plus once a week they go to a specific trainer for a 3 hr session of guard/attack/shutzhund work.
I hope your puppy gets better soon.

Great guard dogs are properly trained to be great guard dogs. German Shepherds have an outstanding history of guard dog work. Start training as soon as your dog feels well enough.
Good luck.

German Shepards do make great guard dogs but there are other species of dogs that are better suit for the position of guard dog and have an even temperment. such as labs, airdales, scotties, any hound. saint bernard.
then if you like the bullies dobie's, rottweiller's, mastiff's, great danes.
If it was me wanting a guard dog it would probably be a german shepard but i also trained them in the army over in Germany. Just because I have some experience in the true temperment of a shepard like dog.

*prayer said for your puppy* and yes, GSD are very sweet and protective. They bond to the people around them very quickly, and people are generally afraid of them, so just having one around your house will offer some degree of protection. I watched a friends german shepherd and within 24 hours he was completely protecting me (not aggressivly, but he would let me know if people came to the door) it was so nice!

Unless this puppy was imported or is out of WORKING import parents, no. The shepherd of old that was a great working dog is, for all intents and purposes, dead. Do not count on any dog to protect you without the proper training. Few dogs have the ability to qualify to receive this type of training. Good luck with your puppy.
