The Smithsonian, Historical Societies...

It would be an incredible research project to determine the names of ALL those who fought in the Civil War... even if you only picked one side !!

My father was doing geneological work in 1980, searching for a record of an ancestor (David Henry Cole) who served in the Union Army... all he had to work with was grandma's recollections (it was her dad) and one photo. Dad wrote to the Smithsonian with a copy of the photo... they identified his uniform as a Pvt in the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, G Company. Dad was able then to contact the Madison, WI historical society and they sold him a copy of the Muster-Roster (list of those who had served with that Company).

So after much work he had the names of about 250 men.

Go to Google.com Type Civil War Veterans and hit enter. There are many lists by states and by the Union. You will never find them all.
