A Golden Retriever can swim outdoors this time of year. They have a double coat that keeps them insulated and repels water. Some breeds that swim are less tolerant of the cold, but you shouldn't have any problems. I would however, regulate the amount of time your dog is out there (ie increase the time in the warmer weather).
Have fun. Your dog will let you know when and if he's had enough.

Even though Golden do have a double coat they can still suffer if the water is very cold.
I don't let my goldens swim unless the air temp is at least 60 degrees or more and the water temp is above 45 degrees. Then is't a short swim, because I dont want to have to go into the water to rescue a 80to 90 pound Golden who swam out to far and now is too tired to come back in.
If the water is too cold it saps the strength out of the dogs. If it's a romp on the shore then it's a different matter with the dog just getting wet.

Pretty much anytype of weather. Golden Retrievers are sport water dogs so they can swim in any temp. water and in any season that the lake is open. Our choc. lab loves to go swimming. We use him for duck hunting in the fall and its pretty cold and hes fine. Plus our choc. lab/rotti will go swimming even when there is a thin layer of ice on the lake (our backyard is Lake Champlain in Vermont) hell go running to the lake and break up all the ice just so that he could swim.
Plus G.R have thick outer and inner layer hairs that will keep it warm.

Should be fairly warm, dogs can suffer from hypothermia just like people. Get your dad to check the water himself, if he is good with it, then the dog will be fine.

It doesn't really matter, your dad is right. The only thing you have to look for is the ear infection that might occur if the water is polluted. So, keep an eye on that.
