Hi all

I lived and worked for 2 months in 2006 in IL.

I was then employed by an employer in KS for 10 months and the employer paid KS taxes. I lived in IL during this time.

How do I file this tax return? Does it matter that I've lived in IL while paying KS taxes?

Thanks!

You will need to file an IL-1040 since you are a resident and report all your income.

Since you paid KS tax on your income, IL will give you a credit for paying taxes to another state. You will need to file an IL Schedule CR (below) to calculate this credit.

You will also need to file a non-resident Kansas tax return (Form K-40)

You'll file in Illinois as a full-year resident, and Kansas as a nonresident. The forms are pretty straightforward, just follow the worksheets in the instructions.

Pretty simple actually, you will have to file taxes in both states, as part time resident of each state, do a search on their websites, then download the forms, follow the directions and sign them and send them in. Of course don't forget the IRS too for federal, unfortunately! Hopefully you've got money coming back!
