I'm stressed out quite often because I am 21, paying for school on my own, and I don't have any family. All I have time to do is work, school and sleep. I know that all this will pay off when I graduate so I am trying to hang in there, but because I have to pay for school myself it's taking longer than 4 yrs to finish, and I am getting discouraged. I really want friends and a life, but it's not possible because all my free time must be spent at work or sleeping. I study at work, so I don’t need study buddies. Since I am so tired and frustrated with my life it's hard to make friends. I can’t take less than 4-5 classes a semester because of my financial situation. So, cutting back on classes is not a an option.
I found a place a can get cheap counseling, but I'm not sure if I should go or not because I'm not depressed everyday. I only get depressed about once a month for 2 days or so. Should I see a counselor or not?

Yes, I think that you should see a counselor. You are going through what would be a difficult time for anyone. I have great admiration for what you're doing and I'm sorry that you have no family to fall back on. Look on the bright side.... you're at least almost 3/4 finished. God bless you.

Yes. Even if you aren't depressed that often, depression is a mental illness, and like all illnesses, you can fall into relapse. If you continue to go to this, you may achieve a height of optimism in your life you had never expected to achieve. You will most likely benefit most from keeping this counseling. As for the friends issue, you apparently had time to get on and post this question. So, I suggest that you set aside a mere 1/2 hour to write letters or email at least, and have a little fun. If you write letters, when you are unable to contact your friends, you can always look back at a letter they sent. It is a wonderful way to make your life brighter at any time. Good luck!

Three cheers to you for working so hard and pressing on with your studies!!!
But you need balance in your life and not just pressure. I tend to get depressed from working too hard and getting worn out. I have found that a daily walk of 15-20 minutes helps me to release stress and also increases the positive neurotransmitters in the brain that make one feel more cheerful.
Your 2 days of depression a month might also be linked to your monthly hormone cycle.
It also helps me to read my Bible every day and spend some quiet time with God.

I think you have somewhat the wrong idea for counseling. You shouldn't wait until you completely lose it, to get counseling.

A counselor can help you manage your very stressful lifestyle and help you make the decisions best suited for you.

I had no family at all. Thought I could do it all alone. I.....completely lost it.

Go get counseling, if for nothing more than support and we all need that. I think you will be very glad you did

If you think talking to someone would help you cope, you should go. Everyone needs a sounding board, and a counselor can be a good one because you know whatever you say stays with him or her.

It would not hurt to see a counselor, but I am wondering when you could make time to see a counselor.

If you can make time for that then make time for a little fun.
