I am new to fishing and I recently got a new spinning reel and rod. I don't however know how to fill the reel with line. I've searched the web but I can't find anything detailed enough to help me. I've never filled a reel before. Anyone have any links to video or detailed instructions on how to do it?

i dont have any links however it is pretty simple all you have to do is tie the line around the spool and close the bail. then have a buddy stick a pencil throught the line(most line packages have holes in the center) and the reel in with your friend holding the pencil and it will load you up. hope this helped and good luck fishing.

I've always had someone hold the spool of line with a pencil through the middle, with tension on the spool while I reel it in. If you are really picky, most sporting goods stores will load your reel for you with an electrical device that does the same thing.

Advice: You don't need to fill your spool with expensive line. Fill the spool with cheap or left-over line about 1/3. Then, tie it off and tie on new line the rest of the way, but not all the way full. Saves a bundle, since I doubt most fish will take all the line. If they do, you can honestly say, "it took all the line".

Here's How: `

Pull old line off reel thu line guides until you have enough room on spool for new line
Always leave some line from spool through rod guides and past end of rod to tie new line to
Tie new line to end of old line with two clinch knots
Lay spool of new line of floor so line comes off spool just like it goes on reel spool
Hold line tight with left hand just above reel
Reel line onto reel slowly, making sure it is spooled tightly
Fill spool to within 1/8 inch of spool lip
