A mono amp is a single channel amplifier. Used mainly for running sub(s). A two channel amp you can run two speakers in stereo mode by using both channels. Or you can combine the two channels together known as bridge mode which would be the same as a mono amplifier. And a muliti channel amp is an amp with 4 or more channels. A four channel amp is mainly used for running mid range speakers. Two channels for fronts and two for the rears. You can also get six channel amps. These are made for running an entire audio system, you would use channels 1,2 for your front speakers and use channels 3,4 for your rear speakers, and you would use channels 5,6 for your subwoofers or you could combine channels 5,6 in bridge (mono) mode and run on big subwoofer. Hope this helps.

Well, as others have said is mostly true with the exception that ANYTHING with more than 1 channel is a multi-channel amp.

Each channel has the abiltiy to run as many speakers as the impedance (ohms=resistance ) load will allow.

To clarify, say I have a mono amp that 500 watts RMS @ 4 ohms, I can wire four subs that are 125 @ 4 ohms each with them wired like so http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j230/sparky3489/SERIES-PARALLEL.jpg

Notice the watts RMS of each susb is 1/4 the total watts RMS of the one channel. The load (resistance) is a calculated amount for a series-parallel configuration.

This is true of all amps. The important thing to consider is to not put too much of a load on a channel.

The calculate ohms in series, the ohms just get added, but for parallel it's a bit more tricky as this is the equation:

where Z is the total impedance and sub# is each sub (or each coil in a mutli-coiled sub):

Z = 1 (1/sub1 + 1/sub2 + 1/sub3 + ...) as many as you have.

A mono amp has only 1 output. A 2 channel has, you guessed it, 2 outputs. A multi-channel has 3 or more outputs. How many channels you need depends on your desired setup.
