I mean how much time and at what heat?

Medium rare. If you over cook steak (esp. filet) you are ruining it. You cook every bit of the flavor out.
Cook about 5 minutes on the first side and 3 to 4 on the other. Use a little olive oil in the pan and heat pretty high. Season before you put in the pan. More done than that use 6 and 5 minute. You want the outside to char and the inside to be at least pink.
rare= cold red center
mid rare= warm red center
medium= thin hot red center mostly pink or pink throughout
mid well= thin pink center
well= shoe leather its ruined. No pink.

Although experienced cooks can touch a piece of beef to gage doneness, I recommend using a meat thermometer.
Even my chefs at the restaurant use one to double check themselves, especially when cooking expensive product!

A dry, high heat method such as broiling, roasting, pan-frying or grilling work well with this tender cut of beef.

Using a heavy sauté pan or even better, a cast iron skillet, will form that brown, flavorful, crusty surface that everyone seems to love. Yummy!

Meat Thermometer Cooking Temperatures
NOTE! The meat continues to cook for a few minutes after you remove it from the heat.

RARE: 130-140 degrees
MEDIUM-RARE: 140-150 degrees
MEDIUM: 150-160 degrees
WELL DONE: 160-170 degrees

Well, of course it depends on how thick the steak is. I cooked one last night about 4 minutes on each side at 350 degrees under the broiler part of the oven. We like it medium. Well done tends to dry it out.

Many grilling recipies recommend grilling filet steak over direct-medium heat.
