She stays in the house, is trained to stay in the yard and has never strayed away. We don't know if she was stolen and was finding her way back home, but was found almost two weeks after her disappearance about a mile away from home. We aren't sure, but she may have been in heat. Also are there any particular complications to be worried about because of her age if she is pregnant?

Hi Beastyjoan!
Confirming pregnancy necessitates a trip to the veterinary office. The earliest method of pregnancy detection is ultrasound -- a nice test because it is noninvasive and very reliable. Fetal heartbeats can be detected at around the 25th day from first breeding.

Most experienced veterinarians can determine pregnancy by simply feeling the dog's abdomen during a certain a window of time -- about 20-30 days after conception. During this time period, there is uterine swelling around the placental sites that feels like firm and discrete lumps. After 30 days, the uterine swelling is more diffuse and it is difficult to distinguish the gravid uterus from the feel of the intestinal tract. Dogs that are very large or obese may be difficult to examine in any stage.

A third way to detect pregnancy is by taking x-rays. Fetal skeletons can be visualized at about 45 days of pregnancy.

Most likely your veterinarian may recommend pre-natal vitamins, fatty acids, folic acid, and other B vitamins are considered safe. Your veterinarian may recommend calcium supplementation to the ***** after whelping.

I would recommend a thorough examination by your veterinarian. This will help detect any developing health problems of your a 10 year old Australian Shepherd pregnant dog as early as possible.

10 years old is pretty old for a dog to get pregnant! Since dogs are only pregnant for 9 weeks, it generally takes about 7 weeks before an xray can be done to see if the dog is pregnant and how many pups she's having. Watch the dog carefully for weight gain and her teets swelling..and of course her belly betting better. If you take her in before 7 wks, they'll tell you it's too early.

You should have her Spayed immediately! She is too old to be going through this. It would be the best thing to do for her.

it will take a month for you to notice, and if she's at an older age it may be dangerous to have the puppies....
