2) How can I start to learn more asl if I know a little already?

As for the first question, every "dialect" of ASL has a slightly different way to sign words like this.
For the second question, I would suggest taking classes at your local college (Community or 4 year). Most colleges now consider ASL a foreign language so it is becoming easier to find. Some community colleges have a 2 year interpreter programs, if you really enjoy the ASL classes!

You can spell out tom and sign boy but you still may need to describe what tomboy means to the person you are signing to. If you are deaf and have never 'heard' the term, it won't make any sense.
In addition to taking a class (either at a college or local learning annex) you can sometimes find groups who meet locally to practice signing, also there are organizations (these are usually service organizations that are intermediaries between the deaf and hearing cultures) that offer free learning options for the public so there can be more communication available for the deaf.
You can probably find out more if you contact a local ASL instuctor or translator. Most public elementary or high scool will have a translator on staff or on-call that may be able to direct you also.
