You need to increase her fiber consumption. Fiber helps keep the Gastro Intestional tract moving. Check the amount of fiber in the ingd. of you canned dog food. Also make sure that there is no BHA, BHT and Medadione "anything" in your dog food, BHA & BHT are carsinigines, and Medadione causes kidney and liver damage.

Also make sure she has plenty of water and is drinking it. Water helps lube up the Gastro Instestional tract and aid in proper nutrition absorbtion.

You can try putting some warm water in with her wet food if you notice she is not drinking enough water.

You can try "Cat Lax" its a gel that helps cats pass hair balls, its a laxitive. It works really well to help elivate constipation.

Also, If your dog still get constipated, it may be time for you to take her in to your vet, to have her kidneys checked. Many times the kidneys begin to stop working as effectivly and can cause constipation ( a rare but plausable side effect of kidney damage). Plus this is common in older dogs - their kidneys failing.

NEVER GIVE YOUR OLDER PETS HUMAN MEDICATIONS UNLESS CLEARED BY YOUR VETERINARIAN.!!! This is because, their kidneys and liver is aged and not functioning the way it used to when it was young and vital, many human medications pose numerouse side effects on humans themselves - and can be toxic and fatal to pets. NO PETPTO! esp on older pets - it will cause irreptuable damage to the kidneys and liver, and to a pet with ailing kidneys or liver will be fatal!

Also make sure you are feeding a Meat ( lamb, chicken or beef) and not a meat meal - these are animal byproducts ( hooves, beaks - basically everything that the meat markets for human consuptions markets wouldn't buy). Make sure the meat is within the frist 5 listed ingd., because that is what the majority of the food consists of. Example if it reads: Chicken Meal, Corn, Meat Meal, Corn Meal and Rice Meal, your pet is missing out on vital nutrience and not getting enough fiber and Meat stustinance. Just some helpful Nutritonal Advise.

Oh, hey I have lots of experience with this. Our chihuahua has some chronic constipation issues. Basically the treatment is the same for dogs as for humans. First, take her to your vet for a check-up and to make sure there's nothing else going on (such as a blockage or partial blockage), and if it is just constipation, your vet can give you a stool softener to try. Make sure she has lots of fresh water 24/7, and even a slow walk around the block will do wonders for keeping things moving along. Best of luck, but I would start with my veterinarian if she hasn't been seen for this already and properly diagnosed.

A small amount of Vaseline may help, it works great on a cat passing hairballs. But your better off with a visit to the vet to find out what the cause is. There may even be a bowel obstruction and this is very serious if there would be one. I've been around a variety of animals all my life and I get calls from friends and my childrens friends on what to do. Like yesterday my daughters friend call about a vomiting dog with black puke. I knew it wasn't good and told her to call the vet for advise until her guardian got there. (The guardian works 1 hour away) She did and they later rushed her to the vets, it's still a mystery, but they are watching the dog very closely untli all the lab work comes back. I either go to or consult my vet even for the smallest animal we have (mice).

Try a teaspoon of soft margarine or butter. Just hold out the spoon with what ever one you want to try and the dog will eat it off of the spoon. It should do the trick. If she continues with constipation, give her margarine or butter twice a month, like every other week. Hope this helps.

I called my vet not even two weeks ago to ask her the same thing about my poor pooch. She said that in MOST cases it's safe to give a dog the same kind of medicine you would give yourself, but in a miniscule amount. So, I've got a shiz tzu/terrier mix that had an upset stomach and she told me to give him a teaspoon of pepto bismol. It really does work for them like it will for you. You've just got to make sure to not over-medicate your pup. So try to give it a small amount of a laxative (I would suggest a liquid form and soak it into a piece of bread or something of the like), and see if that doesn't work. Also, you may try to introduce some foods that have more fiber into the dog's diet.

Add fibre to her diet. Not alot, but do it on a regular basis.
If the dog is constipated you can go to the drug store and
buy suppositories for an infant and just put one inside the
dogs bum and within 15 minutes the dog will need to go.

Petey is a 7 yr. old Chihuahua and I feed him broccoli w/cheese or cauliflower with butter. Vegetables are good for dogs just put cheese or butter on them so they'll taste good and most dogs will eat vegetables.

You can give her plain canned pumpkin, 1-2 Tablespoons with her meals. Make sure she is getting plenty of water also.
