I am going to have to disagree. I doubt this is shin splints, which are very painful whenever you walk on it. Also the pain is focused on the shin, which is not what you described.
If it happens when you are lying in bed, or not using the muscle, I'd say you are getting Charley horses. When I get these I point my toe up towards the ceiling and they go away instantly. For whatever reason, elongating the muscle seems to work for at least me. You could also try stretching it.
And usually they don' have anything to do with the heart. It could be dehydration or a mineral deficiency (often potassium).

These are commonly refered to as "shin splints" and this happens from suddenly overworking a muscle with a warm-up or the result of overwork. Solution? A teaspoon of blackstrap molasses and a banana--both have the nutrients you need to restore the necessary supplements to the damaged muscles. And of course, massaging the area! Aplication of heat help as well.
The problem might just be a nutirent deficiency too(not salt though!) Sometimes nutrient deficiency can lead to restless leg syndrom as well.

I agree with the lack of salt theory. I have lived in a hot country and we lose salt through sweat. When I don't tkae enough salt I have all problems with cramp. Or perhaps you've exercised too much and lost salt that way. I don't mean go and eat loads of salt. Just a touch more on food does it.

I used to get cramps in my calves when I didnt eat for a few days. My mum said this was because I didnt have enough salt in my body. Are you getting enough salt?
