West 104th and Columbus is a nice area. Some folks think the area is "questionable" (as you euphamistically put it) because that part of the neighborhood is heavily Dominican and Puerto Rican and there is a public housing project nearby.
But it's a perfectly alright area - if you're not racist and are comfortable living around a lot of Latinos.
Hell, AYH has a youth hostel full of those European backpacker kids right around there - they never have a problem and they're not even from here!!! So you'll do fine!

The city and that area are generally safe. But the issue here is that there's a housing project right near 104th and Columbus -- or at least a bunch of structures that look like that. (Sorry if I'm wrong about that.) Anyway, you'll probably be fine in that apartment although, as another person said, west of Amsterdam might be better. At night you might feel more comfortable taking the 1 train to 103rd & Broadway and walking back rather than the B/C to 103rd & CPW.

A lot of Columbia and Banard students live in that area. That area has changed a lot in the last 30 years. Each year it gets safer and safer, although it's not the best of areas like the upper east side or West 104th and West End Avenue. If you could get a reasonably priced apartment on that street take it. That's highly desirable NYC real estate. Just be careful and you should be okay. Manhattan is loaded with NYPD.

The area is not dangerous for an urban section of the city. Yes, one must be careful (like anyplace in the city or the world in general), but there are no roving gangs of spiky and colored-hair and tattooed thugs running around the streets like in the Death Wish movies.
There are no roving packs of feral minority thugs looking for Caucasian people to terrorize. The only terror occurring is the gentrification of neighborhoods in Upper Manhattan and Brooklyn that had predominantly minority populations that are seeing an influx of Caucasian people (who are generally welcomed), who somehow "fear" the people they are supplanting.
I wish that people stop acting paranoid about New York City (which is a lot safer than many places in the country and the world). If you are so concerned about getting ripped off, I would look at the rent that you're probably paying for your apartment.

You want to stay away from that area.
If you want anything safe, please look at anything below 96th Street.
A girl named Sarah Fox lived on 104th & Columbus and she went for a daytime jog and ended up raped and murdered. They never found her killer. You can look her up in Google.

It's a safe area but like anywhere in NYC you have to be careful and be sensible (e.g., don't walk around late at night, don't wear your headphones because you need to be alert to your surroundings). Alot of Columbia U students live in that area so I think it's pretty safe.
