Carl Sagan's "Dragons of Eden", but any Sagan books would do, to show how man can overcome obstacles and reach beyond his grasp.

Any objective book about mankind's history to show how mankind went astray.

A TV Guide to show how stupid mankind is.

The word 'in many situations empty' does not, in all honesty, do it justice; so permit me help you accessible with some mind's eye on *purely* how empty the universe is, and *purely* how damaging the universe is: - The 'liveable' share of the universe (ie, the place we can stay) is basically a million x 10^-sixty 5 of the universe; it somewhat is a million divided by using 10 accompanied by using sixty 4 zeros - a huge selection so small that we don't have a recognition for it! - the same old density of remember for the time of all yet a minute share of the universe is equivalent to that of 6 specks of airborne dirt and dust in an in any different case empty Grand imperative Station! - Even the 'liveable'' share is in many situations empty area, in that if an atom's nucleus have been to be greater advantageous to the size of the solar then the innermost electron shell could be at a distance 4 situations greater advantageous away than Pluto, with not something between it and the nucleus! - on the earth itself, there are quite a few billion species of existence, all yet some hundred of which might kill us the two immediately or slowly! - And interior the overpowering majority of the Universe, we'd the two burn, freeze, suffocate or explode interior 5 seconds of exposure! So, a 'loving god' made this place for us, and the 'evidence for god' is in his creation and all around us!? If it is the terrific evidence, then he's the two careless, hates us, or undeniable does not exist!

I would choose the complete works of William Shakespeare as he covers all the classic themes.

I would choose a book that tells the history of world up to today.

I would not choose the Bible per say but a religious text that explains all the different religions of our time.

That's a hard question. There are so many good books! Offhand:
Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
A basic pharmacological medical text with reference to natural products, finding, extracting and preserving them-just in case this is post-apocalypse and we have to make our own medicines...so we don't have to got through the whole alchemy/magic/Dark Ages thing again. Forget religious texts--Man is eminently capable of recreating those on his own!

My suggestions would be:

the original King James version of the Bible
The Odyssey (by Homer)
The Canterbury Tales (by Chaucer)

Definitly not the Bible, it teaches more bad than good. Adultry, slavery, killing, nationalism, envy, egotism and hipocracy, to name just a few lessons so I would go with a writting language primer, Roberts Rules of Order, and a Math primer.

I'd want the complete works of Shakespeare, Sophocles and probably Tennyson or Chaucer. Only three is impossible.
