Hmm, I think when a house is big enough to have more than one living space, the main living space would be set aside for guests or formal visitors (and have more expensive or fragile decorations and furniture) while the other living space would be were the children spend their time and that one could be called the family room.

The differance depends on your living style. Most generally the rule of thumb is a livingroom is for guest, formal, stuffy and well decorated while the familyroom is comfortable, has the TV and all the good stuff in it... it's for hanging out with your family.
However in my house the livingroom is just that, the livingroom where all the family can be, we all enjoy the room ,TV, it's a comfortable space, and it's ok to pull up a pillow and sit on the floor!
Having 2 rooms seems a bit wasteful to me, why would you want a fancyroom for guests and not your family is beyond me. I would rather impress my family than guest! Seems foolish to me but that is the differance.

Living Rooms are for more formal occasions and receiving guests. Family rooms are casual day to day hang out rooms.
