How can something be "new," that is, it never existed before, and at the same time "improved" implying that it DID exist previously?

Yes, you are right. I have seen this in front of me at the store all the time and never questioned it. You have an amazing mind.

I don't understand your question...new means different...not that it didn't exist before.

Can't I make a new version of an old song?...people seem to all the time. Not only did they make a new version, but it's better...it's new and improved.

Its called advertiseing.. You noticed it right..Then the exercise worked. Some even bought it. Its all about selling product. nothing more or nothing less.. If its inproved its not new its just an old product with a new label. Of course they probably added some minute ingredient..So it is improved ..but new naaaa..

If you improve a product it's automatically different than it was before, which makes it a new version. Or, simply, new.

That is a very good point. I have wondered that myself many times.

"new" could also mean never used before.
