Is it something specifically religious, like a firm belief that you're going to heaven not hell, or is it something more general like a sense of belonging, fitting in with your culture, etc?

The purpose of all religions has been to make man aware of his spiritual nature, to make him aware that he is not only a material being but also a spiritual being.
That what matters most in this physical plane of existence is for him to acquire moral virtues and to put them to the service of others. That the well being of society it's peace, security and progress depends on the transformation that he needs to accomplish in him.
This process of education of mankind has been a gradual and progressive one, which explains why the many religions in existence in the world.
People who object to religions, are looking at the final stages of desintegration of those religions, forgetting that all of them gave their fruit in the past and that they have competed their cycle of existence.

I've gotten everything out of it. Sorry if that sounds unclear, but I just can't imagine my life now without the knowledge of God. I do believe I will go to heaven, not because I have any special virtue on my own, but because I have accepted God's promise. I have no reason to fear death, or hell. I believe that God will watch over and protect my children, and help me to be a better parent. I believe that God guides me, sometimes gently and sometimes firmly, and saves me even from myself. But one thing I do not get out of it is a sense of belonging or fitting in with my culture. A true Christian does not belong here and does not fit in with this culture. My home is elsewhere, and I will be there soon.

Another good question. This one I will answer short and sweet. I looked up religion in the dictionary and it is listed as follows for 1 defined position:

A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.

With this definition religion I guess is the center of most everyones life as most do persue somewhat in a conscientious devotion their own concepts or their views and do express them to others. To go deeper, is not it in fact the real foundation of every activity theat one does persue?

Just something to think about OK

For me, what I get out of it the most are methods of developing myself into what I consider to be a better person. For example, reading from Scriptures which reiterate the ethical life puts you in the frame of mind of being careful to live morally. And I pray for the relief of suffering for all beings, which makes me have strong feelings of love and compassion on everyone I see. Religion fulfills a yearning within me to be devoted to what I'll call God.

I don't have a religion. I have faith, but I do not have a religion i.e. Christianity, Hinduism etc.

And my faith doesn't allow me to fit in or belong. Quite the opposite. I am an outsider.

I have faith because it is inherent in me. The knowledge of my creator, and the knowledge that we were created out of love to love. Having limitless hope - despite tragedies.

Truth is a communal concept, I cannot 'get' anything from religion. To purport such in one flaw that seems to exist throughout theology. The idea of non-physical truth leading to some sort of personal satisfaction is also illogical.

Basically, I'm saying that I'm in it for the principle of the thing, not because it makes me feel happy happy joy joy or anything of that sort.

Close friendship with the greatest friend I could ever have, who loves me as no human lover can, and whom I can love more freely and trustingly than I could love even the best human. It's all about that relationship. If you've been in love with God, I don't need to explain. If you haven't been, the explanation probably would sound looney.

Excellent question. I am going to guess that it is the fellowship with friends.

I just see religion has binding and restrictive. I will never allow my life to be dictated by idiotic religious dogma. Guilt is something that I will live without.

For me, personally, it's a sense of peace. When I meditate, do puja, or sing devotional songs...there is a sense of peace and calm as I let my mind focus on the Divine.
