We have a 3 year old female shiba inu. She is a great dog and we have no problems with her in our neigborhood. She's outgoing and friendly with our neighbors and their dogs. The problem is when we take her out of her familiar surroundings she gets very nervous and shy. How can we help her get over her fears?

Dogs have distinct personalities, just like humans, and every other animal. I have a very shy dog my self, and from my own experiences, it is best to just keep at it. Keep putting her in those situations as long as you are there as someone to comfort her. The more she interacts and gets used to unfamiliar situations, the more she will learn to adjust. She will always have her shy tendencies and it might be something you cant break her of...again, think of people, but with lots of time and attention you should be able to get through it. Just remember positive reinforcement as well. Carry something special, like a toy or treat that she can only have when she is out and about in a new area, then she will be eager to take those walks and go to the park, because she knows something special will happen!

Get her used to strangers. When someone comes over, let her be petted, when you go out pet her and let strangers come up and pet her.
