How come so many of you Americans often say to ME PERSONALLY: "If it wasn't for us, you'd all be speaking German!" If my grandfather was still alive he'd have a few things to say about that. (and he fought exceptionally hard, and took four bullets in his body too and still managed to survive!) Do you Americans not realise the British fought very hard during that war, and managed to win the Battle of Britain on our own before you lot arrived?

i'm sorry for that. i would never say that to you or anyone.
me personally, i had no part in that war, so i cannot take any credit.
and if it wasn't for japan/pearl harbor, we might not have entered at all.

I like to say it was a great Allied Victory, and when I hear from an American about us speaking German - I always say, well, if it wasn't for us, then you Americans would be speaking Dutch and Spanish ....

In fact although hundreds of thousands of British soldiers fought very hard and with great bravery, it is also true that without American Lend-Lease, Britain would have been starved into submission by 1942 when the US troops started arriving...that's according to Winston Churchill btw

Of course, I admire and respect all British soldiers who fought in that war, and it is annoying to hear something like that from an American, but it is true that without the US, Britain would NEVER have been able to invade Western Europe on 6th June 1944.

When some of my American friends and colleagues say that to me, I also like to say, yes thanks for sending money and food until the American People were prepared to fight, which only happened after Pearl Harbour...

read my source below for more info...

Hope that puts it into perspective!

America some times have a short memory, they did not get involved in the second world war unit near the end and only after much pressure from Winston Churchill. The American did help us out with supply ships, weapons and raw materials however it was only last year that we (UK) finished paying back this debt.
Sometimes the US take movies like saving private as the real events (No British solderers).

Come on now, you know what these bloody colonials are like - always saving the world.

Due to 60 years of hollywood they all believe they won the war for us. My dad told me about a popular saying during the war:

When the British shoot - the Germans duck.

When the Germans shoot - the British duck.

When the Americans shoot - EVERYONE ducks!

They also believe they won in Vietnam and I'm sure in 10 years or so we'll all be treated to films about the successful liberation of Iraq.

America is a relitively new country which has found it'self a major world power - think 'spoilt kid with the designer trainers showing off in the playground' and you get the idea.

Individually Americans can be very nice. Collectively they seem to all turn into prats.

Actually my good man you are a bit off base here. While the British fought gallantly in war two without the US assisting with the "lend-lease act" and the US treasury there was a fair possibility of Britain succumbing to the Nazi's. To say that the British won the battle of Britain alone is not anywhere near the truth. The British did in fact come very close to the edge at times. The greatest British contribution to winning war two in my opinion is tieing up Rommel's Afrika corps so well.

I will not speak for all Americans, but you could make the argument
the other way too: If the Brits hadn't held out against the Blitz, we might
all be speaking German too...

There were a lot of heroes in that war - Germans too.

I am an American who realizes that we should try to get along. That means not talking to people of other countries like you example. You are right there were and are many brave British soldiers. The British endured a horrendous onslaught during the blitz and stood strongly. They/ you should be proud.

Isn't it time we put all this behind us and just honour the memory of all who suffered and did not return home and I include all the soldiers from commonwealth countries and the Eastern Block and even the Germans who were not all Nazis, some Germans helped my father escape a POW camp so he could return to fight.Don't forget there are heroes on all sides even sometimes your enemy,God Bless them all who fight for the right.

I don't mean to apologize for the limp liberals but most of that BS does come from them. I know history more than most of them. I know the Brits fought well and hard. Please don't group all Americans together. Some of us actually know the truth.

By the way, after reading your first answer from that dumbass liberal, I stand corrected, please do take it out on these loathsome lying freaks called liberals.
