I've been into wicca, but I haven't told my parents. I tried to buy a book on it but my dad said 'This is about wicca, and we believe in christianity.' I don't want to tell my parents about it but i can't do anything until i have their approval. What should I do?

kittykat is incorrect -- witchcraft is practiced by many Wiccans, but not all.

Two good books for explaining Wicca to loved ones who are not of the faith are "When Someone You Love Is Wiccan: A Guide to Witchcraft and Paganism for Concerned Friends, Nervous Parents, and Curious Co-Workers" by Carl McColman, and "The Law Enforcement Guide to Wicca" by Kerr Cuhulain.

You could also direct them too (or print out material from) the following websites:

A relatively objective (non-Wiccan) set of articles on what Wiccans do and believe:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/witchcra.htm

Another useful article:

http://www.religionfacts.com/neopaganism/paths/wicca.htm

A good site by Wiccans:

http://wicca.timerift.net

And the US Army Chaplains Handbook excerpt on Wicca:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/wic_usbk.htm

If you simply think that there's nothing you can do to tell your parents about Wicca -- then don't. (Though I'll say that if you try it, you might be pleasantly surprised if you do it properly.) You don't have to start practicing the religion right away, and in fact you can spend the next couple of years mastering techniques of mindfulness and meditation that will serve you well when you're on your own and can practice Wicca fully.

If your parents would like to talk to an older adult who is Wiccan, you can certainly have them email me -- I'll be happy to answer any questions they may have (or any you have, for that matter).

I wish you the best of luck on your path.

You dont have to tell them.. You dont have to buy books. there are several useful sites online.. that you can use... then when you are able to tell them and be able to do your own thing will probably be when you are out of their house or atleast 18.. but use the online information. dont let anyone discourage your beliefs.. I am wiccan and have been practicing for a little over a year but have been practicing and studying witchcraft for about 2 years... My family just learned that i was wiccan a couple of months ago... My family are extreme christians and because of the same reason you do not want to tell them is why I didnt tell them... It wasnt that i was afraid of telling them, I just didnt want to listen to their BS.
Goodluck and study and study and when you have finished studying study more.. wicca is one religion that you will never know all of the answers to.. as the gods and goddesses are in everything and nature changes all the time.. But goodluck and if you have any questions I will be glad to help any way I can..
Blessed Be

If you need to have their approval for what you want to buy or do (I gather you are a minor, living with your parents?), keep quiet for a little longer. When you move out, follow your own path.

When I told my parents I did not believe in christianity and the church, they did not like it but I was strong enough and they were understanding enough to handle that time. We agreed to disagree. Sounds like you don't have that luxury. The best option would be to "lay low" until you become more independent. You may want to start by letting them know that you are not buying the church talk any more.

that's what we in the religion call 'in the broom closet'. no need to come out. there are plenty of us solitary practitioners out there, myself included. in my opinion you should tell your parents how you feel if you wish. they should be supportive of your decision, personally i feel everyon should find their own views on religion (i'm not in any way a supporter of organized religion, hence solitary practitioner.... use some guidelines... long story) . if you must make the point that they may believe in christianity but you've chosen a different view. they're really not that different as far as religions go, sit down and explain it.

if you don't want to you don't have to. i never did but that's my choice, i could and i knwo they would accept it i jsut feel more comfortable keeping it private and not making a big deal of it.

good luck

You aren't going to get their approval. And as long as you live under their roof you need to respect them and their wishes.

And you don't really need a book or trapping to practice Wicca. You can hold your beliefs in your heart.

When you move out of the house and are an adult - then you can practice as you wish.

You don't have to tell them. You'll probably be feeling quite guilty about it, tho, and perhaps it would just be best if you stayed a christian until you were your own legal guardian. That way the relationship between you and your parents isn't severely damaged, and you can be whatever religion you choose without having to lie.

If were you, I'd ditch Wicca like a bad habit.

I was Wiccan when I was a teenager. When I got older I found out WIcca was a hoax created in the 1950s so Gerald Gardner could be tied up and beaten by strong willed women.

If you're interested in Wicca, these past answers my be helpful to you.

Do what you feel is right. If your parents were wiccan, and you were wanting jesus, the same people here who say "listen to your parents" would be mailing you stuff in secret to disobey them... If you are old enough to get on the net, you are old enough to buy things to learn about wicca, or at least to google more info.. good luck..

Respect your parents wishes about what they will allow in their house.

Find a pagan store, ask if you can leave your books there, go to the library and see what they have as well, go by and read them when you have time.

When you are old enough to live on your own, with your own rules then you can have what you want in your house.

You live with your parents? It would be best to just tell them, but be prepared before you do. Study your beliefs. You might want to print out the Prinicipals of Wiccan Belief and show them to them.

Some libraries have books. Otherwise you might try learning online. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=BlueFireWitch
