They are the same car, just when you purchase the beetle you could choose between the 2 trimmings. Gls is better than the Gl. The gls may come with leather seats while the gl would have cloth. The difference has nothing to do with the transmission, basically just the looks.

They are different trim levels. The Gls may come standard with leather and alloy wheels and some other options. The gl will have cloth and steel wheels but the other things can be purchased for extra money.

Just a guess, but I'm thinking the GL has automatic transmission and GLS has the stick shift and stiffer suspension.
