The Ten Commandments are in Exodus because they were given on the way to the promise land. Leviticus has to do with the Priestly Code -- mostly -- that is how the priest and people should behave and is an expansion of the Law. The Ten Commandments are repeated in Deuteronomy before the Israelites enter the Promised Land.
A good question.

I suspect that the original author(s) were more interested in some kind of chronological continuity. And the laws propounded in Leviticus would be conceived at a somewhat later date then Moses' return from the Mount.
After all, we still do it that way today. Somebody thinks up a law, it's put into effect and some while later someone else figures out a loophole for it and then you gotta pass another law to close the loophole. Or, someone does an end run around the law, claiming the law as it stands doesn't apply to a particular set of circumstances (ie, the end run), and you gotta pass another one to clarify the original one. And so it goes, until you've gone from ten little old commandments to the 13,000 odd laws observant Jews are stuck with today.
Sometimes it seems people aren't the only thing God wanted to be fruitful and multiply.

Commandments are not laws. There are columns of "God's laws" a few pages from the commandments.
In common law there are old laws about how much you can feed a goose before taking it to market. Some of the King's--sometimes Baron's--commandments included "Bridle rights" when a peasant maiden married another peasant the King could call on her to come to him on the wedding night.
Why don't y'all do some research on your own Bible!!!!! Ten commandments begin on Exodus 20, the Laws begin on Exodus 21.
I'm so tired of prepping you on your favorite holy quotation Book.

The Law of Moses was written for the Jews and was only to last until the time of Christ. In the Law of Moses, the blood of animals was required to atone for the sins of the people. These sacrifices were temporary. Now, we have the perfect sacrifice. God's only begotten son, being without sin, offered Himself as a sacrifice to forgive sins from the time of His death until His return. When Jesus died on the cross, the temporary Law of Moses was fulfilled and is no longer necessary. Christians today are to follow Jesus Christ. Since He Himself reinstated all but one of the Ten Commandments (the Sabbath), Christians are obligated to obey nine of the Ten Commandments.

The ten commandements are the laws given to the whole humanity. The other laws have a historical limit, set by Jesus who e.g .stoped being stoned to death (that woman...)Jesus mentioned again the ten commandements who used to be written at sight at everyone's house at the door or so ..as God said .
Jesus made the ten commandents stronger e.g first ,by abolishing the death punishment..''The one who never sin should be the first who throws the stone into the woman...''-Jesus(so, it is shown in the movie, should be in the bible..too)
So ''You shall not kill'' became a stronger comandement , -the punishment with death being abolished by Jesus , -so this commandement didn't become weaker because he asked them to leave the stone..He wanted to say all of them were sinners and deserved death...
But the priests thought the teachings of Jesus are against their old law..
Yes these are the ten famous comandements given by God.The other were completing a practice , used historically , but some of them or most ..abolished by Jesus. Also the animal sacrifice was stoped by Jesus and God (who through the Holly Spirit who went with the apostoles said that the sacrifice is ..man should have a pure body and soul )actually animal sacrifice was a kind of other comandements from those beside the ten .(compleeting their law )Otherwise, why don't bring the Jews ,some animal sacrifice even today?
But the ten commandements are those writen on the tables by God, with His finger..My Bible edition from 1688 (Ortodox)is very logical.
The other commandements are completations given by God in historicall circumstances ..because they were bad..Jesus improved their life and brought the comandements to perfection ...This ten commadements are the substance of God's teachings that is why they are only ten..Everyone could be saved in Heaven if he/she believes in God, and fulfills the ten commandemets made stronger by Jesus who asked forgiveness for all.''Love your neighbour ''means to forgive him.So if you fulfill the ten comandements you can be saved in Heaven, but every comandemet means more that it seems to mean.If someone kills your relative, e.g.you must forgive him ...etc..So you see it is hard to fulfill the ten comandements, because not all can love his enemy as Jesus asked, and the enemy is not the boss who gives you a small salary..the enemy is much worse..that is why it is called enemy...If you go to psychologist and say ..the boss is my enemy..they will say you are crazy. We must hate only satan..You see even nowaday there are other comandements although cannot be find among the ten.- To cover our body with clothes ...

I think there was a mix up a the printers. They were trying to rush the book out for the Winter Solstice celebration because the fiction genre had been week that year and they reckoned that they could clinch the best seller title.

Actually, the Law in the Pentateuch consists of 613 commandments.
By your logic, there should be 614 books.

If the Law could have saved us then there would have been no reason for The Father to have sent Jesus Christ....
If you think the 10 Commandments will suffice to get you to heaven, then Christ died in vain.
However, he didn't die in vain...and faith in his sacrifice is all that is needed to enter into eternal life.
