GOD can do anything-He is God, it was predicted that He would come to earth and He did--Isaiah 9:6 and Isaiah 52:13-53:12 that he would lay down his life to make atonment for our sins. So God did come to earth as a man Jesus-and in heaven it is unknown about the God head-only that Jesus is at the right hand of the Father making intercession, and that when we see the Messiah Jeuss we shall be like Him. the Bible

My own poor understanding is that God's true appearance is something we cannot now imagine. Portraying Him in manlike form is done because people simply cannot envision His true glory. When the Bible says man is made "in God's image", this means a spiritual likeness rather than a physical one. Similar is the portrayal of angels as winged, doe-eyed boys and maidens. Nowhere in the Bible are they described thus; it is simply an image that people can understand, applied to what we cannot otherwise imagine.

Judaism originated by remaining separate from cultures that made their pharoahs (or other leaders, moon, sun, etc.) into gods. In the 3rd century A.D., when Christians agreed on the Nicene creed making Jesus into a god, it was necessary for Jews to separate themselves from the Jewish sect that couldn't worship a God they could not see for themselves.
