I would try a bark collar personally. They are not inhumane I promise =) There are two types (that I know of). The spray collar and the shock collar.
Spray: Has compressed air (either scented usually like citronella or unscented) in a little box that is attached to the collar and placed under the dogs neck. When the dog barks the box feels the vibrations from the dogs voice box and a small burst of air shoots up into the dogs face. They quickly get the point that if they don't bark, they don't get sprayed.
Shock: Emits a small shock into the dog whenever they bark. This is AFTER the collar BEEPS. This is a warning beep. If the dog stops barking the collar will not shock him. The shocks get progressively stronger the longer the dog keeps barking but the also have a safety shut off where it will stop shocking the dog if he continues to bark for a certain amount of time.
There are also training collars availale that are remote controlled and it basically does the above just when you want it to. So if you don't mind if he see's a squirrell and barks you could let him but when someone comes to the door you could press the button. Bark collars work best when training is also implemented so be sure to tell him "No" or "Bad" when he barks at someone, and reward him when he is silent!! Anyways whatever method you choose good luck!

Firstly, please remember that your dog is a dog. Barking is what they do. For years and years and years they have had the responsibility of keeping danger (real or perceived) away from their family, their livestock, and their home. I believe that it is very important to acknowledge that the dog has properly sounded an alarm, but once they notify you of danger, then you (as 'alpha' dog of the house) can take over and decide if there is danger or not.
I have 2 things you might try. Both involve your immediate action, so that the dog is very clear as to what behaviour you are trying to discourage. The first is to buy a squeezy lemon juice container, not the bottle - and when the dog barks, you can immediately scold 'no barking' and squirt the lemon juice in their mouth. A word of caution - be responsible with this and make very sure they do not get the juice in their eyes. This worked for a while for me, but in the end my dog learned to hide the lemon...The second thing you can try is to teach your dog to 'speak' on command. After they have that down pat, you can next introduce the command of your choice (such as 'quiet') to instruct them that it's time for no more barking. Every dog is different, I have one (the one who hides the lemon) who has lost his hearing, so he no longer hears a leaf drop in the next county and begins his barking tirade, and the other is very soft hearted, and what I can do with her is simply go to the window, tell her she's a good girl for warning me of imminent danger, and that it's time to 'hush' now.

He is a dog and doing a perfectly normal thing for a dog... defending his territory and warning you of someone being nearby. Try to encourage him to stop once he has barked once or twice by coming to him and telling him he is a good boy and telling him "that's enough now" and patting him, distract him with a little play session. He will soon get the drift that he is rewarded when he stops barking soon. Good luck.
Cheers,
Lisa

Firmly (not abusive) let him/her know this is not pleasing you. Dogs want to please their owners. Tone of voice is best. Remember, these are pack animals and they want to protect their property and their owners.
Actually, I like it when my dog warns me when someone is around. I do nothing.
You can also call your vet or an obedience trainer for advice. Or it could be fun to go to a few classes if you can afford the price.

my dog does this too
what we do is if we see someone ahead of time, say no bark, and hold hius muzzle, and so he just growles, which is better then barks and doesnt get as annoying, so then thats all he will do
