It's very common in Lebanon. In fact it's a pretty strong tradition among the Orthodox Christians there. You'll see someone named after his father with his "middle name" being the only unique name. So he might be George Thomas George (Gewargis Thom Gewargis).

Parents can be amazingly cruel
My family name is also used as a first name by others.
Richard Prichard is another example.
It is in full Richard ap Richard, welsh for Richard son of Richard.

my brother used to go out with a girl called Nicola Nikkilson. I used to think it was hilarious. Also, my mates boyfriends parents are called Micheal and Janet Jackson, that never fails to amuse me too.

I went to high school with a guy named thomas thomas

my best friend told me that if she had been a he, her parents would haved named her Martin Martin.

Not quite the same but my mum told me if I was another boy (after having 4) she was gonna call me Horrice...my surname was Harris!!....
