For those who loves drinking coffee...
Just the aromatic smell of it in the first thing in the morning...or when they wake up is just enough to make them jump of the bed coz they can't wait to have a cup of their fave coffee.
Coffee is already in their system. LOL! (--,)

Jeez. The meaning is totally different. Google says it's to pay attention to what's going on around you and see that things have changed or something. ..
If wake up is used...certainly the person is not aware of what's happening around him or her.
Smell the coffee could be used as smell and get a hang of exactly what's next to you. Understand something that's really obvious. See, a coffee cup and it's smell next to you is obvious and you are not getting it for some reason.....something that everyone else can know right next to you being too obvious. That's why a person would say wake up and smell the coffee
