Why is he so concerned with deceiving people, gathering souls, or whatever it is he's supposed to do? Why doesn't he just put his feet up and enjoy life (or rather, death)? Note that I'm not asking what he supposedly does, but why he does it.

I'm not religious, but its my understanding that satan's main goal is to undermine everything that god tries to do. God "supposedly" wants all of his creations to be with him in heaven, and satan sets out to deceive mankind so that they'll be eternally separated from god. I guess its basically "misery loves company". He knows that he's apparently going to suffer, so he's going to take as much of the human race down with him.

That being said, the biggest question is why would a loving, compassionate god allow him the opportunity to do this?

From what I have been taught at my church (Wesleyan), Satan deceives people because he does not want them to have the sort of "glory" of getting to be in Heaven that he lost when he was cast out after his failed rebellion against God. The best anyone in my church can guess, he rebelled because he was greedy and wanted God's power and authority for himself, so he could be the one to be "large and in charge" instead of God. As for why he does it, it's mostly because he still wants control of Heaven for himself, and is still trying to rebel against God, and he tries to deceive people and gather their souls, is because he is following the the thinking that "if he can't be allowed to have it, then no one else should be allowed to either."

It is childish and absurd to believe in the existence of a being competing with God and as powerful or maybe even more that Him.
Satan represents our ego. Our worst enemy.
The best way to explain this point to humanity, when it was still in it's infancy, and psychology was unknown, was with the graphical representation of a being.

Because he is trying to steal souls from God in effort to try to be more powerful than God. Being the father of deception he is also deceived. He will not rule in hell he will be cast into the lake of fire and suffer himself. I believe it is also resentment based. He resents that God threw him out of heaven and is trying to steal souls from God. Another reason is that it is his job to torment and tempt people. That is what God has commanded him to do. God allowed Satan to test Job. He also allows Satan to test us still. It is our job to be faithful to God and not reject God through it all.

his goal as an angel was to defeat and aim to have more power than God....if there is a Satan and he's busy corrupting and collecting souls then his goal is still the same.

I'm pretty sure it all started when he had the goal of being equal to or better than God. He wants that power.

He does it because he doesn't want to be the only one burning in Hell. He wants many other people to suffer with him.
