we are putting ceramic tile on a wall and want to know if we have to prime the wall or will the thinset adhere to the wall where we patched the drywall

It'll stick, but will the drywall support the weight? If you're doing a back splash in the kitchen, its probably OK, but for larger areas (like in the bathroom) you'll want to put up a fiberglass/concrete backer board for wet areas, or secure a wire mesh to studs for larger wall areas.

If you are doing a backsplash, no you need to use mastic. It is white and thicker. It will hold the tile to the wall, where thinset will just slide off, or it wont hold up. But if you are doing it where there is a chance that it could get wet, like in a shower, you need to use a backerboard instead of drywall.

I would suggest that you use cement board. thinset on wood or drywall does not work very well. the wood or drywell pull the moisture out of the thinset to fast so it will loose its holding power.
