He was actually working on a new kind of telegraph when
he discovered that his invention would also carry sound
waves.

The phone used to work by having a diaphram compress
and uncompress carbon which changed its resistance to
electrical current.

This varying electrical current can be transmitted over long
distances to an electromagnetic coil which would produce
a stronger or weaker magnetic field based on the current
based on the compression of the carbon based on the
position of the diaphram based on the sound waves...

The magnetic field would in turn attract or not attract another
diaphram (the cone of a speaker) which would in turn move
air about which is pretty much the definition of a sound wave.

The invention hasn't really changed all that much - there is now
a lot of electronics to allow the signal to be sent over longer
distances, there is now electronic switching to make sure
the signal gets sent to the right phone - microphones no longer
work by compressing carbon ...

It has revolutionized business and personal lives, by making
it possible to communicate with people who would otherwise
not have any sort of relationship with because of their distance.

Bell, like Edison, was trying to improve the world. His tought of mass communication was along the lines of the telegraph but he wanted to improve the speed and quality. As for the rest of your question, i think it is pretty much clear that once something is invented, others carry forward with it, i.e. the airplane by the Wright Brothers and now we have modern day aircraft. The phonograph has now been replaced by c.d.'s. I think you would end up having a major thesis on all this. Too much to explain just here on Yahoo. Put your mind to it.
