Serious runners wear shoes when running on the beach. Without them, you get no support and can't go very far without pain. Also, running barefoot on loose sand for any distance increases the risk of sprains and strains due to lack of support. In addition, without shoes you risk being cut by anything in the sand (shells, glass, driftwood, etc).

That being said, you don't really keep the sand out. Wear socks to avoid friction between your skin and the inevitable grains that will enter. However, I find that that I do not get much sand in my shoes when I run on the beach (which I do very often!).

Technique for sand running in general covers beach running. Though some people stay on the hard packed sand near the water, those seeking a harder workout will run upbeach in the loose. To make your efforts more productive, practice what I call high-knee running. A flatter impact with the foot and a more forward, upward, stompish step will help you gain the most ground with the least effort. If you try to run on your toes you will have problems and if you have too high of a recovery you will throw sand everywhere and just dig yourself in. Think of sand running as marching: straighter back, arms pumping solidly, high knees with a slight forward lean. It seems odd but you will feel the difference!

Good luck!!!

It's called pro-nating (sp) I have it too, although not nearly as bad as you. And I would also strongly disagree with your view on quality running shoes. Did you know that asics, NB, and Nike all put out a shoe that's priced higher than all the others, but is of no better or even worse quailty to their actual top of the line shoe? It's a marketing trick to fool people into believing they are getting the best shoe! I would say you need to see a sports peditraist about your pronation and he'll probably have the knowledge to fix your stride, not to mention how much more efficent your run will become if you get it corrected. I would also recommed you buy the $60 pair of asics or whatever brand you run next time, I bet you can't distinguish between the two, and they may even last longer. I understand that money doesn't grow on trees, but get this fixed it will help you out in the long run... no pun intended

I think most people go barefoot. There is a small risk of stepping on something sharp, however. If you decide to wear shoes, the only way to keep sand out would be to put a plastic bag over them and tape it around your ankle. It would wear out before long, but would last awhile.

I am a barefoot runner. If I was running for exercise or sports I would wear running sneakers and stay in the wet sand area.
