Depends on where you live! For the US, try http://www.gens-us.net/
If it's an unusual surname, you can do www.switchboard.com or www.theultimates.com and enter in a state to see how many hits you get per state. There's also www.zabasearch.com
I think there's a surname map for the UK too, and possibly other places but don't have the addresses to hand.
