My lab is a little over 3 months now and he has plenty of chew toys, but I know he would love a real bone. I've heard they should be past a certain age before you can give them one. Is this true? How old exactly?

yes it is o k but make sure it is ONLY a marrow bone - they love to chew the marrow out of the inside - I cook mine in the microwave about 4 minutes then put in refrigerator.

He is old enough, however, be careful and watch the dog for awhile after giving it to him, some get "over excited", it's like the hunter in them comes out when given a real bone. Also, make sure there are no sharp shards, if the bone breaks into small chunks, remove, the dog may swallow it and then it gets internal damage.

Yes, this is prime chewing age, and he will love it! It must be a raw marrow bone. Joints are even better, they last much longer, and small bits of bone are less liable to break off.

All my Lab pups were enjoying raw bones by 3 months, and it certainly saved the furniture!

When our Boston Terrier had puppies, we waited about 3-4 months to give them bones to chew on. So, I suppose it would be okay to give them to your lab.
Just, for the love of god, do not give them chicken bones. EVER!

We have always given our dogs soup bones and they LOVE them, they're awesome. What I do is cook them in the oven (they will stink up the house!) then freeze them. They would keep my dogs occupied for hours, trying to get every last bit out of there.

Once they break, you should keep and eye to make sure he doesn't swallow tiny pieces.

And I agree that he is probably old enough to enjoy them now. :)

hmmm... i would wait until he is at least 6 months. and you have to make sure that the bone cant splinter because it can get stuck in the throat and be very painful. it happened to my dog when he was 4 months old. its better to be on the safe side ya know.

don't give you dog real bones,.they tend to get tiny little pieces of bone in their intestinal system causing a health problem down the road,.buy your dogs (bone Hyde) that breaks down in the stomach,.you can find bone Hyde at your local pet store,.believe me it's much better for you and your dogs,..
