I'm playing a level 5 (NYSSMA) this year, Five Bagatelles by Gerald Finzi, movements 1, 4, and 5 (Prelude, Forlana, Fughetta). Are there any things I should keep in mind when playing this piece for judging?

While I'm not familiar with this particular piece, I have judged similar events, only for the flute. As a judge I'd always be looking for an excellent tone and rhythmic accuracy. To really stand apart from other players, I'd strive for very clean articulations played in the style of the music. Since you are playing several movements, I'm assuming they are in contrasting styles, so try to make the most of those contrasts, perhaps in expression and dynamics, and again in the way you articulate (ex: smooth legato playing versus a playful staccato or an agitated marcato.)

For me, players who really express the music BEYOND the notes written on the page are the ones who stand out. GOOD LUCK!!!
