I have 2 very indoor cats. But we are moving to a nice house that has a BIG backyard and would like our girls to enjoy it as well but in a safe way such as an enclosure of some kind. Do you know of any way we could do this very inexpensively? Of course, they would only be out there when we are out there. They wouldnt have access to it otherwise. We love them too much for that.

Serious replies only please.

First off, I would like to complement you on the many answers you have supplied over time. They have not gone unnoticed. In answer to the question, you may find it cheaper and safer to invest in a premade unit, as buying the pieces and trying to put them together not knowing how safe or secure it will be. Pet smart has about the nicest units for over the counter sales. Cat Fancy magazine also has adds for the same. Mail orders can be reasonable, but sometimes the shipping eats up the savings. A nice spot by an east or west window that opens, is a good way for the girls to injoy the out of doors, and not to worry about ground bases fleas. Have fun!

Because cats are so agile and can jump and climb so well, I would seriously consider harnesses and leashes so that you can supervise their exploring. Otherwise, you could try large dog kennels like these: http://www.petproproducts.com/
However, because the kennel is very climbable, you'll want to look at kennel covers: http://www.optionspluskennels.com/kennelcover.htm
This one looks best because it doesn't leave a gap between the fencing and the roof - http://www.optionspluskennels.com/hardroof.htm

I'm not sure what defines inexpensive to you, but the ones on that site are about $130ish for a bigger size. I stand by my first suggestion for harnesses and leashes though, because they get to go all over the yard to a limit that you set. Someone I know has three cats that get to go outside on leashes that, when they're not holding them, are tied to a stick in the ground. It's significantly cheaper than buying a kennel, but it all depends on your personal preference.

I bought and installed the commercial cat fence-in when it first came out around 12 years ago and it keeps my cats on my property and other cats or critter from coming in.

Actually the principle is rather simple and you can go to catfencein.com and see what it is and I think they have a video there too. So if you or your partner are at all handy it can be set up inexpensively.

I have a 6 1/2 foot privacy fence that is completely flat on the inside and keep nothing close to the fence to assist in getting over it. Be careful of holes. Other than that, try a light dog lead, keep it free of obstacles and use a harness.

If the cats are declawed its rather easy, if not, its a bit more tricky.

When you let them go outside, go out there with them. Don't put them on a leash or anything, just let them wonder. I do this to Cupid when I let him out. If they start running away from you, then yes get a leash or a harness. You may even have to look on-line for some sort of kitty house that you can set up outside. I don't think that it's that expensive. Also you have the kitty condo as well. Set it up on the backdoor but outside. That way they have something to play on. Hope this helps girl.

If you don't want to build something I guess you could use a large dog kennel. I use to take my cat and my ferrets out with a harness and a leash. The three of them had a blast together.

well is youre new place has a bigger fences that the cats cant jump higher enough to get over the fences ? or you can train them some house work for them to stay only on the yard instead running away .

THere are leashes and harnesses for cats. Collars too. You could walk your cat. There are also tunnels that you hook up to cat doors to allow your cat to "walk" themselves. You can fence them in or tie them out too.
