In a retail sense it is food that has been produced with a "limited" amount of chemicals to ward of insects, generally protect the plant, and enhance the quality.
There has been a craze recently for "Organic food" and the only way to ensure your food is 100% organic is to grow your own.

"Organic" food is produced without the use of chemical fertilisers or chemical processing that alter the original foods.
It is NOT, as the person above suggests, simply food grown in horse manure! And there is LOADS of evidence to say that eating Organic food IS a lot better for you. Why else would we be doing it?
You will find it costs more because there aren't many farmers doing it yet. The other way to look at the cost is that the premium that you pay for Organic food is taking into account the true cost of production, whereas "normal" food is ignoring the cost to the earth.
I'd also suggest you find a book called "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson. It's an true eye-opener that ended up getting her killed by her opponents.
I agree that many of the certification systems have been compromised. It's a really big shame that the big industrial farming conglomerates have compromised it in a way, but it's also good that they are thinking that it's a bandwagon worth climbing on board!
If you want to be really positive that what you're munching on is truly chemical free, try the "Biodynamic" products. This is one area that the big companies will never be able to muscle in on, because it's less about chemical use and more about a whole lifestyle approach to farming and food, even extending to education through the Steiner School system. Check out Rudolf Steiner's stuff on the web. He was the one who came up with the concept and I for one think it's a really valuable contribution to the whole debate!!!

It is food and meat that has been produced WITHOUT the use of petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides. The farm or ranch must be industrial AG free for at least 3 years. If you want quality and assurance that the food your buying is organic make sure it has at least 2 certifications. Because of the Bush administration the USDA organic certification is no longer relevant but has been altered so big AG business can compete with small organic farms (that is because large farms-monoculture-can not produce the same yields).
However the real organic movement was intended for you to be aware of what you eat so therefor grow your own.

Organic means grown in horse manure. It's just a word trick to attract yuppies and liberals to buy the products. Only nominally better, if any at all, and not always a good thing.

LOL and to follow up on the previous answer, its food that has an "organic" label on it, put there by a produce supplier who knows it can be proven how they grew it.
