Years ago, I was told by a stylist that I needed to use mousse or some sort of styling product anytime I used heat to style my hair or else it would become damaged.

My hair is very damaged now and I went to a different hair salon to get advice and they recommended silk drops, which I've been using for a few weeks.
I asked a question about hair care on YA a week or so ago and several people discouraged the use of styling products, but is it better to use heat with products or without? Some of my friends say that only certain products will damage your hair (mousse, for example).

Gah...confusion. Can someone help me understand this? Are there any styling products that don't damage your hair? Does one have to use them everytime one uses heat to style? What works best?

I am a stylist so listen carefully.

Hair products do not damage hair.

Heat and chemicals damage hair.

Your first stylst was correct. You must use some type of products when blowdrying or flat-ironing your hair. She just rocommend the wrong type.

You need a thermal protectant. These products come is different forms, some in oils others in lotions. My personal fav. is L'oreal Professional Serum. It costs about $26 but will last forever 'cause you only use a little.

Apply the serum to your hair before you blowdry. If you flat-iron, blowdry the moisture from you hair then apply the serum before you flat-iron.

And yes apply the serum everytime you apply heat. Also you a good hydrating shampoo and conditioner and get regular haircuts for the next six months (regular is every 6-8 weeks) and your hair will be nice and healthy soon.

Good Luck

Actually, i think there are certain products especially made for the problem of heat and damage,
Here are some tips:
To combat this damage, wash daily with Dove Advanced Care Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner For More Severely Damaged Hair. Before applying the heat of a blow dryer or flat iron, work a small amount of Dove Straight & Soft Sleek Styling Cream into the hair. This lightweight cream can help protect hair from the damage heat styling tools can cause and creates a straight, sleek look with long-lasting control against frizz and flyaways.

Blow dry your hair with the aid of a natural bristle paddle brush then use the flat iron to straighten hair, section by section. Keep the flat iron moving to prevent overheating. When complete, apply a small amount of Dove Intense Frizz Control For Very Dry or Thick Hair from your roots to the ends for a frizz-free style.

Here's another way to minimize damage when blow drying your hair straight.

1)
Remove as much moisture as possible with a towel. Wet hair and heat just do not mix, due to the weakened state of your locks when they are wet, heat styling can cause serious damage. To prevent this damage remove as much moisture as possible before blow drying, and use your blow dryer on a low heat setting.
2)
After you've removed the excess moisture, smooth in a heat protective product, like Redken's Heat Glide. These are usually serums that give your hair an extra defense against heat styling.

Yes, you just have to buy good ones, that don't contain much or have no alcohol. Don't use mousse, as this makes hair crispy, and it won't protect your hair from the heat. You need a product that says it protects your hair...basically a specialised one for drying/straightening.

I recommend:
VO5...Miracle Mist Heat Defense Conditioning Spray

Toni & Guy Iron-It Heat Defence Spray (best out of all of these I think)
Mark Hill Heat Protection Spray

I started using Nick Chavez a couple of years ago and haven't switched hair products yet. He sells a moisturizing mousse so your hair doesn't dry out. Just don't use conditioner on your hair everytime you shampoo because it's not healthy for your hair.
