From any good book on cat physiology, you will learn that there are many different ways in which a cat wags it's tails, each having a different meaning. Its like a language that cats have to communicate with each other and us humans.

I currently have 3 cats -- and in the course of my 44 year life span have probably had 20 or 25 of them, so I know a little about them! Cats can wag their tails for a lot of different reasons. Some wag their tails because they are annoyed, some wag their tails because they ware excited and want to play, some wag their tails because they are in pain. It just depends upon your kitty. Surely you should know him/her well enough to judge it's mood!

It's generally a sign of annoyance if you are picking on it. Cats also swish their tails while watching birds or concentrating on stalking something.
For my cat, she swishes her tail when she's happy, which is different from other cats I've known.
If the tail is wagging slowly and not in a swatting manner, it is a sign of contentment.

Hi, Usually when my cat wat's his tail, it means he is in a bad mood and we had better watch out, because if we are stroking him roughly and he starts doing this he is going to strike us, either through scratching or biting. Cat's also do this when they see birds and they get excited, but usually you can tell the difference.

I think it depends on how fast the cat wags its tail.
When my female cat is snuggling with me and she wags her tail slowly, I think it means she is happy. However, if I'm holding her too closely and she wants to go someplace else, she starts to whip it back and forth more harshly. That means she's pissed.

I like this Haiku:
The dog wags his tail
Seeking approval. See mine?
Different message.
Usually when a cat swishes its tail it is expressing mild annoyance or when it is about to pounce on prey.

He is probably getting ready to strike. Like when he see's a bird , he will get low to the ground and move his tail really fast. Also if I make my cat mad , he will do this also.

It can mean a couple of different things. It could mean the cat is about to pounce on something or that it's happy.
