This may sound crazy ( I think so) but my mother's dog groomer told her that her dog has a skin yeast infection and suggested she buy an atheletes foot spray and put it on her dog? Has anyone on here ever heard of such a thing before? Her dog is a cockapoo mix and has been scratching a lot so she is trying anything she can to help the dog. I myself told her not to do every thing everyone tells her. Do you think this could harm the dog? By the way, the dog doesn't have fleas.

I have heard of this before. But it is usually caused by the area staying wet all the time. If your dog has been scratching constantly, then she may be allergic to fleas. Fleas will only stay on an animal long enough to feed, then they'll jump off. So that dog may have been bitten by a flea and caused it to scratch until it's raw. Now, it's also very possible that the dog could have developed a secondary skin infection, from all the intense scratching. If this is true, then the dog will need antibiotics. The best thing to do is to bring it to a vet, and then it can be determined exactly what's going on. If the dog continues to scratch, that area will only intensify in its inflammation and won't heal by itself. Think about this. Best of luck to you.

Yes dogs can have a yeast infection on their skin. I would take them to the vet though so the vet can make sure it isn't something like a bacteria infection or mange or a fungal infection. Do not spray anything on your pet unless the vet tells you too. Somethings that cure one type of problem make others worse like if it has mange you do not want to give it steroids or it makes it worse. Athletes foot spray is for a fungus so I dont think it will help a yeast infection but I dont know for sure. If you take it to the vet they may be able to tell your mom what is wrong and how to help your dog. The dog could possibly be allergic to the shampoo the groomer uses and is scratching from an allergy. There are lots of things that can be wrong from scratching excessively so unless your groomer is also a DVM, I would take her to the vet.Good luck and I hope this helps

I don't know what that groomer was talking about. If your mom's dog has what is called a hot spot then she should take the dog to the vets for the proper medication.
Hot spots are caused by a irritation the dog gets and they scratch the area until it gets so irritated that it gets gooey and smells really bad. Sometimes an allergy can cause the skin to get irritated sometimes it's a change in weather and sometimes it's food.
Whatever is causing the dog to scratch itself only a vet can help. The sooner the better, these things can get really infected.

Yes...My dog has had chronic yeast infections of the skin. It can be difficult to treat. The first thing she should do is change the food to a high quality one like canidae brand and see what happens after a month. It may be something else but a good dog food can do wonders.

This is nothing to fool around with, and there are several things it could be. Impossible to say without seeing the dog. Take her to the vet and don't put anything on her, you might make it far worse.
