To Father K, I had to leave a protestant run Alpha Course because the leaders didn't event accept Jesus was a Jew and said the Jewish God wasn't the same as the Christian God. I ended up leaving as it was turning into an arguement and with all the teachers telling meI was wrong and they were right and not to set foot in the church again. Some also said they would never go to a catholic church as that is not a place of God.

To Gemma, Have you never heard of the split in the church? Catholic and protestant murdering each other of the years? Each claiming to be the only way to God

Because they place more importance on theological disputes and differences of opinion, rather than focussing on the things which unite them. They should simply follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and live them in their lives. Christianity shouldn't be about saying everyone else goes to hell, but about showing the path that leads to true happiness.

Don't listen to them, many have not discovered the errors of their denominations past history.

Having a 'religion' will not save anyone, a person must have a personal Relationship with God and Christ Jesus. Following traditions set down by religious men, will just lead to confusion and get you in trouble.

Read the Bible, Jesus Christ never denounced that He was a Jew. What He did say was that "religious" traditions were not the way to eternal life. He was trying to teach people to rely on a personal relationship with God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), not on men or their ways. "Do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the Word of God."

As believers of Jesus Christ, and having God as our Heavenly Father; we are called "Citizens of the Kingdom of God". Not 'members' of a particular denominational church organization.

There is only one being capable of saying who will or will not be going to hell, that is God.

You will know a cult by a couple of key factors.

1.) They will say they are the "only way" when Jesus said clearly HE is the only way. Just because they use the name of Jesus, doesn't give them the authority of Jesus.

2.) They will say their Bible is the only accurate translation. Jehovah Witnesses and Catholics share this in common as well as Mormons replacing the Bible due to it being in error.

3.) They will promote another book instead of or in tandem to the Bible. Mormonism is a good example here.

4.) Mediation to God will include something or someone other than Jesus. This could include saints, priests, Mary, the Law, the church itself, an angel or prophet.

Those are some good basic principles for identifying a cult or cult-like behavior.

I'm almost 50, I went to Catholic schools, and I keep studying. I find fault in many things fallible people do, and I don't defend things out of reflex.
No Catholic cleric or educator has ever said to me that you must be Catholic to go to heaven.
Some churches have that approach, and that's their problem.

You do have a point in one respect. The fact that there are thousands of sects shows how people are more interested in differences than unity.

funny how the catholic and orthodox churches have stayed stable for millenia...and they don't bash others

Read the bible and ask the Lord for guidance. Religion is the way people interpret bible. Thats why some many denominations exist. If you believe in Christ you will follow His example in the bible. If you are in a church and what they say does not match up with what is in the bible then you will know if that is where you need to be. Perservance is a must so continue to search. Good luck.

It doesn't matter what THEY say, ask the spirit of god into you and ask of it and listen for the answers and then do Gods will is what Jesus wishes for us to do. if you do not do Gods will, you will not go to heaven said Jesus,
People will always lead you astray but the spirit of god will never lead you but to heaven and the correct way of living

We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
