The Belvedere in Times Square - extremely clean, very friendly staff and every room has a microwave, fridge and microwave. Rooms start at $160 - you may be able to negotiate a better price at PriceLine or Orbitz. The train and bus are on the corner and there are theatres on the same block.

A hotel, which is close to, but not in Times Square (it's a lovely residential area) is the Murray Hill Suites on East 39th Street (the main street in Times Square is West 42nd Street). Every room is a suite, has private showers, kitchen area with microwave, fridge, dishwasher, coffeemaker - you'll save money if you make your own breakfast and bring back your restaurant leftovers - and very reasonable rates. Read what other guests have to say - see if they will stay there again, and look at the photos they took (do the same for any hotel that you are considering).

If you don't mind sharing the bathroom,
The Gershwin Hotel is supposed to be the best of the budget hotels - The New York Times says it's spotless - it's in an excellent residential area - 27th Street off Fifth Avenue. They have very inexpensive rooms for two - some with bunk beds and shared bathrooms; the more expensive rooms have private bathrooms. There are many excellent restaurants and coffee shops nearby - close to buses and subway. If you click "Contact" they give you a phone number, a fax number and an email address. This sounds like an excellent deal for one day - (If you require a private bathroom, be sure to specify).

Try the Marrakech Hotel. Mixed reviews, but cheap and on the Upper West Side and close to a lot of museums and the subway.
Also there is a hostel on 110 and Amsterdam, but a very sketchy neighborhood.

Michael M has the right theory, yet in case you want to proceed to exist new york, you are able to note that a reliable inn is largely about two times the cost of a nasty inn so if you're in reality there for some days flow for a reliable one.

Try the YMCA Vanderbilt Hotel, great location very very reasonable prices. I stayed there a long time ago and it was fine but it is not luxurious in any terms.

How about, one in brooklyn. Whenever my aunt from florida visits, she only stays in Brooklyn. Its a bit (ok nto a bit, alot) cheaper than in manhattan. Use mass transit to get to the city. Have fun!
