Okay so I am looking for a first car. My dad is in the insurance business and says that the cars I like aren't good cars. Whatever. But I was wondering what are some cute cars that are under $11,000. Thanks.

Some that I like are
- VW Beetle ( but they suck in the snow)
- VW Passat ( my dad said they aren't reliable?)
- Chevy Cobalt
- Saturn Ion

Any others that you think can think of that I can look at?

It sounds as though your dad will play a role in the purchase of your vehicle (that's what it sounds like).

Tell him to give you a list of the cars that he approves of and you can choose from it. It will cut down on the indecision alot!

Good Luck!

Unfortunately the cars you are looking at are fairly expensive to insure, and of course your father knows this. Another bad thing about them is that they all score very low on reliability ratings. VW's in particular are very unreliable, ranking near the bottom of the charts. They are also very expensive to fix compared to other smaller cars. The Saturn is cheaper to fix and insure, but they are unfortunately poorly made and not even remotely competitive in the small car segment. The Cobalt is an improvement over the Cavalier, but depreciation is high, and overall customer satisfaction is not.

I would say a Honda Civic would be a good choice, but certain trim levels and styles (2drs) can be pricey to insure. A Mazda3 should about be in your price range as well. And of course a Toyota Corolla is always a good (if not boring) choice.

Be smart and factor in things like depreciation (you will want to trade it in some time, and it would be nice to get some money for it), reliability (what you gonna drive while its in the shop and how are you going to pay for it), and at least for now let insurance costs be a factor. Once you are 18, and then 21, insrurance will not be a huge factor.

the cobalt and saturn are absolute junk. people are going to buy on looks first, i know, but you need to get a reliable car also. meaning, one that doesn't have a huge recall list, one that has good gas mileage, one that has a low rating with ins companies to keep your ins cost down, one that is safe and tends to stay out of the garage
