Ft. Benning is supposed to be our next duty station. Is there a lot to do there and in Columbus? Are there nice places to walk and just be out in nature? Are the people nice? Someone told me the staff at the hospital on post are rude, is this true? I have a 7 year old girl, is there a lot for her to do there?

It's o.k. Not my favorite place to be, because it's so far away from a real city. (And that city being Atlanta was NOT by cup of tea.)

I never had a problem with people being rude at the hospital. Actually, I've found them to be very helpful. Maybe your friend was unlucky enough to find the rudest person there, you never know. (Or if this person had repeated problems... maybe this person is just rude and people were reacting to her?)

Since it's a large post, there are a lot of MWR activities for children, so your seven-year-old will enjoy that. On post families send their children (until H.S., anyway) to post schools run by the DoD.... a perk that most domestic posts don't have anymore.

Overall, not bad!

Good luck with your PCS!

Columbus is a nice city for family activities. People think it's a small town but it's quite large. Ft. Benning is cool for an army post.
Columbus is about 100 miles south of Atlanta, 80 miles east of Montgomery, AL and a few hundred miles north of Florida.

There's the riverwalk which trails part of the Chattahoochie River, several family oriented parks for walking. There's lots to do in Columbus.

Take a looksee at the links below.

Benning isnt too bad. We were there for a year. They are curently building brand new housing and a new PX (should be done next year). There are a lot of places to go for walks, parks etc. Only 2 hours from Atlanta.

I never had any bad experiences at the hospital, the staff has always been really friendly and helpfull.

Not sure about things for your daughter, my son is only 2 so we arent involved in school age programs yet.

No fair. You get a new duty station.

Georgia in general - there's Stone Mountain up near Atlanta, Savannah, the mountains, etc.

I lived in Stone Mountain area for about 10 yrs. Long time ago.

There is not a whole lot to do, but there is a lot of local history. the base itself looks like they provide lots of family activities, but since I was a civilian working there I cannot really tell what the quality of the activities are. The people in the area were very friendly, and open to strangers.
