what muscles of the body do pushups benefit?
I heard that it makes women look buff like a man and I certainly do not want that?

Depends on what you mean by that question, as well as how you do those pushups.

Pushups are great exercises because they work the chest, shoulders, and arms. You can vary the routine in different ways:

1. Go for reps (how many pushups can you do?)

2. Vary the speed

3. Go plyometric (think Army pushups with a clap, sir!)

4. Change the form and work different muscles. Simplest way is place your hands wide (emphasizes the chest) or narrow (works the triceps and forearms), but you can find lots of others.

5. Do them on a stability ball, or basketball. Makes it more difficult, but strengthens your abs and waist muscles.

If you're concerned about getting buff (I assume you mean putting on muscle mass), the fellow below is right: women generally won't get that way, especially from doing regular pushups. In fact, anyone would have to work hard to gain mass, meaning they'd have to work out in a particular way.

Some people think pushups aren't very good building strength; I think they're not using their imagination. Imagination isn't just for artists and musicians.

Difficulty is a relative thing; what's easy for some may be hard for others. If you believe it's hard, it'll be hard. And if you work at something, it gets easier. So don't let anything stop you on this - experiment, look for ways to do pushups diferently, and challenge yourself. That's how you improve.

With a little drive and wit, pushups can be a great way to get conditioned. And - as a bonus - your figure will benefit from it too. What's there not to like about pushups? All the best to you.

Pushups are a superb upper body exercise that use the body’s own weight to build a sound fitness foundation. They promote strength, balance and stability by developing several key muscles, including the pectoralis major in the chest, the deltoids or shoulder muscles, the scapular muscles and rotator cuff, the triceps located on the back of the upper arm and the upper back muscles. Pushups improve range of motion in the upper body and overall upper body strength. They’re important to a fitness regimen for developing general body strength, and core body strength. An important area of strength endurance can be developed through a higher number of repetitions.

Pushups help you gain some more strength in the "shoulder's area". Usually, pushups won't make a woman look as bluff as a man. Women carry estrogen, which is "fat producing". Men, on the other hand, carry testrostone, which creates muscle build more easily. In fact, the more a woman exercises, the more fitter and "firm" she'll be.

Push ups will work your back shoulders and chest. The benefit is that it works you out portionitly to your body weight. If you are bigger of course you are going to have a harder time pushing that weight up. In this case you will build alot of muscle. If you are slender and dont have much weight to push up then it will tone up these muscles.

Push ups are a very comprehensive exercise that works the upper body (chest, shoulders, back, arms and abs).

You won't look like a man...men and professional body builders look like men.

Push ups are very hard and you have to build up to them.
